Abstract

In this beautifully written piece, we follow the author’s exploration of how our connections to the past form a comforting, uncomfortable bond that influences all aspects of our perception, experience, and expectations of not only the present but the future. As pleasant memories unfold, the harsh realities of pain and discomfort associated with them emerge and persist until they can finally dissipate with distance as we unravel the meaning and significance of our past to our present so that we can finally move toward the future, connected, strengthened, not tied to what came before. This well-crafted, thoughtful, artful work presents a story we all share and is a worthy winner of the 2020 3rd Year LA&PS Writing Award.
